Key to progress

As Vermont slowly turns the economy back on, the key will be how people respond to recent changes by the state.

Several things people have greatly missed are being allowed again, including socializing in small groups (10 people or fewer) and low- or no-contact outdoor activities in local recreation areas. The social distancing rule, which officials credit with stemming the spread of COVID-19, remains in effect. And people are asked to only socialize with “trusted households” who’ve been following those guidelines.

Clearly, the changes announced this week aim to strike a balance between allowing some greater level of normal activity, and the need to keep communities safe. This is only a natural next step, given the plateau Vermont is seeing in COVID-19 cases.

As that trend continues, hopefully careful adherence to state guidelines will add to that momentum and drive further progress. Many have adhered to them, while constantly helping their neighbors and communities. That’s an example to keep in mind as we head through these upcoming days. And that strength and determination will guide us forward.
